Waihi Central School is about 100 metres from the Martha open pit. In late 2009 students made a video called Living Next to an Open Cast Mine and entered it into the Panasonic video competition. They were the New Zealand winners, and two students and a teacher headed for Singapore where they were awarded the Best Narrator prize. You can view their video here.
