Waihi's Gold Story - Mine Interpretation Centre

Waihi’s Gold Story provides free static and interactive displays and information about all aspects of mining in Waihi – past, present and future.

The centre is downstairs at the Waihi Visitor Centre at the top of Seddon Street – right opposite the iconic Cornish Pumphouse.

Newmont Waihi Gold Education Centre

The Education Centre is a purpose-built classroom available for use by educational and special interest groups.

The Education Officer provides a curriculum-linked programme for a range of ages and abilities. Students can participate in a circuit of activities relating to past and present mining, minerals, environmental practices, resource use, land rehabilitation, geology and other aspects of the minerals industry.

Teachers can discuss individual requirements with the Education Officer with a view to planning activities that will complement and enhance classroom programmes and help to gain the maximum benefit from a visit to Waihi.

Students and teachers are provided with complimentary educational materials relevant to the age group and subject areas being studied.

Guided mine tours are conducted for school groups as well as general public tours. It is essential to book for these to avoid disappointment.

Viewing platforms and the Pit Rim Walkway

The Pit Rim Walkway encompasses the entire open pit. There are several lookouts that provide great views of the open pit. Interpretation boards explain points of interest. There are also buildings and foundations from early mining days. The circuit is easy walking, pushchair friendly and takes approximately one hour to complete.

The viewing platform at the western side of the open pit can be found at the intersection of Moresby Avenue and Savage Road, right next to the Education Centre. There is a lookout at the top of the north wall of the open pit, accessible from the top of Cambridge Road. The most popular viewing areas are adjacent to the Cornish Pumphouse, at the top of Seddon Street
