ABOUT THE EDUCATION CENTRE

The Martha Mine Education Centre is a purpose-built classroom available for use by educational and special interest groups.

The Education Officer provides a curriculum-linked programme for a range of ages and abilities. Students can participate in a circuit of activities relating to past and present mining, minerals, environmental practices, resource use, land rehabilitation, geology and other aspects of the minerals industry.

Teachers can discuss individual requirements with the Education Officer with a view to planning activities that will complement and enhance classroom programmes and help to gain the maximum benefit from a visit to the Martha Mine.

Students and teachers are provided with complimentary educational materials relevant to the age group and subject areas being studied.

Guided tours of the Martha Mine are conducted for school groups as well as general public tours. It is essential to book for these to avoid disappointment.

The viewing platform at the western side of the open pit is available to the public at all times. This can be found adjacent to the intersection of Moresby Avenue and Savage Road, right next to the Martha Mine Education Centre. To view a street map to find this location, click here.

BROCHURES

Full colour, regularly updated brochures are available to all visitors. These brochures detail the activities of Martha Mine, and have proved to be most useful for schools.

INFOPAK
An information kit comprising of a range of printed material is provided free to school teachers. This kit contains useful text, diagrams and photographs on a wide variety of gold and silver related subjects. Student packs are also available.

DVDs
Martha’s Gold details activities on site. It is available free to teachers and designed for use in schools. Early Gold outlines the history of mining in Waihi. Exploring for Gold explains how we search for and find new gold deposits, Favona backgrounds our underground mine and I Like the Way You Move follows the recent move of Waihi's historic Cornish Pumphouse. These DVDs are all available to schools.
