Martha Laybacks Proposals
Further information rolling out
Newmont Waihi Gold has engaged specialists to undertake studies and prepare reports on a range of subjects related to the Martha east / west layback proposals. We expect that some of their draft reports will be available very soon and we are keen to share this information with the community and receive feedback.
Residents and community groups have indicated that they are interested in the content of these reports and that information sessions should take place early in the new year. This then allows people to take a break to focus attention on the Christmas and New Year holiday period.
With this in mind the company is preparing information packs, display material and a series of presentations with different themes.
The Golden Legacy Centre on the corner of Moresby and Savage Road will become a facility to display current material and provide information for visitors to take away. This facility will be open and staffed every week day starting Monday 7 January 2008, from 10.00am to 2.00pm.
In addition to the centre being open as above for general interest, specialised information sessions will be held every Wednesday at 11.00am, 12.30pm and 5.30pm. Each Wednesday, sessions will target a theme specific to a residential locality or community organisation. We will be inviting residents or organisations to take part in sessions on specific dates that will have relevance to their area of interest. Although the sessions target a theme or locality, anybody who is interested and would like to attend is welcome to do so.
Martha Pit Activities
Work on the south wall stability cut in the Martha Mine open pit is progressing. Currently heavy machinery is excavating close to the pit perimeter, having completed stage 1 of the mining plan. Stage 2 involves work returning to the top of the south wall and removal of the temporary haul road that has been used since work started in September 2006. This means that some activities may be more noticeable from areas beyond the mine site and in some circumstances machinery may be more audible. This should be for a limited time (end of February 2008) and work must comply with construction noise limits. Material to be excavated at this upper level is relatively soft and does not require blasting before it is loaded onto trucks.
Over the Christmas and New Year period, staff working in the open pit will be taking a break from 21 December 2007 to 3 January 2008.
From mid December 2007 until mid - late February 2008, working hours in the open pit will be 7.00am - 7.00pm as usual with extended hours to 9.00pm to allow mining, crushing, conveying and essential maintenance work to be carried out.
