Defibrillators
Newmont Waihi Gold has recently purchased four Automated External Defibrillator (AED) units for use on site and in the community in the event of an emergency related to a heart attack. The units are stationed at the Baxter Road mill, the Grey Street gatehouse, the Moresby Avenue office and the Waihi Visitor Centre, Seddon Street. Training sessions are well underway and it is expected that 100% of Newmont staff and contractors will be familiar with the equipment and its use by the end of the year.
NWG training co-ordinator Sheryl Seymour says it is important that people feel comfortable with the units so maximum benefit can be gained from them.
'The units are supplied by Zoll and we chose them for their simplicity and ease of use. As well as providing training for site personnel we will be running training sessions with Waihi Visitor Centre volunteers,' Sheryl says.
'Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death among adults. Early access to a defibrillator increases a victim's chances of survival and ensures that the patient receives quality treatment in the critical time before professional help is available. With the units being accessible from a range of areas and lots of people knowing how to use them, we hope that they will be very effective in helping to save lives.'
Waihi ConnEXions
A double decker bus carrying a large group of ex Waihi folk made its way into town recently on a nostalgia trip. The Waihi Connections Group from Auckland visited the mine and lunched at the RSA with friends and relatives. Many of the group have links to the old underground mining days.
The group's secretary, Marilyn Morley, was enthusiastic about the trip. "We were absolutely thrilled with the day as we have a great affection and interest in our home town. We were impressed with what Newmont Waihi Gold has done in Waihi and look forward to keeping up with progress."
Te Radar and 'Home Grown'
A new series of 'Home Grown' is about to be screened on TV1 and Waihi will feature in one of the episodes. Te Radar visited way back in April 2007 to film at the mine and we have been looking forward to seeing the programme. It will appear on TV1 on November 22 at 7.00pm.
