Investing in our Community

Newmont Waihi Gold's 'Social Licence to Operate' is as relevant and important as its mining licence or resource consents issued by regulatory authorities. Responsible companies recognise the importance of social obligations and commitment towards the communities in which they operate.

In 2006 donations and sponsorships – financial and in-kind – were provided to the following recipients or projects:

Practising effective communication and consultation, facilitating sustainable development, being transparent and accountable – all help towards building and maintaining good relationships with the community. These people are the most affected by the company’s activities and therefore should also be the first to benefit.

Newmont Waihi Gold has operated a community investment programme for many years to provide support in the form of sponsorships and donations to a range of local groups and projects in the Waihi region. The community investment policy aims to support as wide a range of groups as possible so that maximum benefit can be gained for the greatest number of people.

In order to best respond to community needs and aspirations and to fairly allocate budgeted resources the company follows set procedures and guidelines while also aiming to be flexible and adaptable.

How does it work?

Newmont Waihi Gold receives many requests for financial and in-kind support.

Groups or individuals who wish to submit a request are asked to write a brief letter outlining the project and the assistance being sought with a description about who will benefit and how they will benefit.

A group of three company representatives meet with the general manager once a month – usually in the first half of the month - to consider the written requests that have been received since the last meeting. The community investment team works within a budget and when considering the allocation of funds the following guidelines are used:

  • The recipient’s project principles must be consistent with Newmont values.
  • Support is primarily for community activities that take place within this region.
  • Projects should demonstrate sustainable benefit.
  • Projects with the potential to enhance suitable educational services or opportunities have preference.
  • Applicants should explore other sources for funding other than solely relying on Newmont Waihi Gold.
  • Provision is made to assist individuals or groups who represent, in their chosen field or endeavour, their school, community or region at recognised national or international events or competitions.

After the meeting each applicant is informed of the outcome of the request and procedures to requisition cheques or arrange in-kind support are initiated for the successful applicants. When donations letters are mailed out a feedback form and self addressed envelope are enclosed so recipients have the opportunity to rate the company’s performance, make any comments and consider ways to acknowledge the donation.

Appropriate public acknowledgment of support is encouraged. Newmont Waihi Gold has promotional flags and banners. Recipients can collect these to display at the venue for the event or project for which assistance was provided and the Newmont logo can be supplied for inclusion in programmes, advertising or other written material.
