Drill Bits
Drilling rigs are currently working at Union Hill, in Moresby Avenue adjacent to Waihi Central School and inside the western pit perimeter. Results from this drilling programme will not be known for some months yet.
Primary school students will be visiting one of the rigs to find out what it is doing, how it works and what a drill crew's job entails. While the rig is so accessible it's a great opportunity to check out the action and learn some geology at the same time.
This opportunity is also offered to members of the public who are interested to see what happens on a drill rig. It is essential to book a place on a drill rig visit as numbers will be limited and high-viz safety clothing will be supplied.
The following dates and times are currently available:

Truck Icon to Receive a Facelift
In some cultures people do not like to be photographed as they believe this strips away a layer of their soul. This is possibly what has happened with our 777 Caterpillar dump truck as it sits on display near the Martha Mine western viewing platform on Moresby Avenue.
In the six years it has been on the hill above the Education Centre the truck has been photographed many thousands of times and its paint is now starting to look quite dull. It is therefore to be repainted within the next month. New Zealand Caterpillar agent Gough, Gough and Hamer is sponsoring the project and will supply the yellow top coat paint and new Caterpillar transfers.
The truck will be prepared and painted by Trevor Harvey and team from Coastal Sandblasters, Katikati. The face lift will freshen the truck up for the thousands of visitors to the viewing platform over the summer months and the thousands-more times the truck will be photographed.
'ON THE MOVE' book on the move
Recently a book and DVD compilation about the relocation of Waihi's Cornish Pumphouse was launched and just like the title, 'On the Move' , has been on the move ever since.
The launch was planned to coincide with the Made in Waihi Expo. Copies of the book and DVD were on display and for sale throughout the event weekend. By the end of last week almost half of the total print run of 1000 books had been sold.
Remaining copies can be found at Newmont Waihi Gold's Golden Legacy Centre (near the western viewing platform in Moresby Avenue) and at the new Waihi Visitor Centre in Upper Seddon Street.
The 72-page book features a section containing historic photographs of the Cornish Pumphouse, going back as far as 1903 when the building was under construction as well as some more recent photographs that have become classic favourites.
Text and images explain about preparation for and execution of the relocation of the building throughout 2006 and photographs of the 'Welcome Home' celebration held in February, 2007. The DVD was produced as a companion to the book. It provides graphics and detailed explanations about this unique engineering feat, some great footage of the project and a photograph album accompanied by music composed specially for this DVD.
The book and DVD set makes a perfect gift for anyone with Waihi connections and is an excellent record of events for those people who avidly followed progress during the relocation project.
All proceeds from book and DVD sales will benefit Vision Waihi Trust to help promote Waihi, New Zealand's heart of gold.
